A strange silent guy with glasses named Reggie Dwight loves only two things - his family and the piano. The first, especially the father, does not respond with strong reciprocity, but with the second, everything is much simpler - at one point a talented boy is even taken to the Royal Academy, where he studies music and simultaneously discovers rock and roll. Thus begins his long, funny and painful transformation into Elton John, the British joker and one of the main pillars of all modern pop music.

It is amazing when this is Dexter Fletcher - permanent actor Guy Ritchie with Matthew Vaughn, and more recently also a director - managed to grow from a humble British director into the main Hollywood specialist in biopic of English rock stars. At first he was hired to save “Bohemian Rhapsody” (and something seems to have been saved), now in Cannes they showed him “Rocketman” - a film from which they expected such a “rhapsody of a healthy person”, a Wikipedia movie with good songs and familiar actors, but a little more cautious and, preferably, without such an epileptic installation. The reality turned out to be more interesting and unexpected than any predictions - “Rocketman 4K” is completely different from “Rhapsody”, and, to be honest, it doesn’t look like much at all.

The film seems to deliberately enter into a dialogue with the genre, outlines themes and methods typical of a biopic, but wraps them in something completely different, almost laughing at dry Hollywood academism with a parody of arrogance. The most interesting thing is to compare it with the same long-suffering “Bohemian rhapsody” - there are too many similar introductory notes: the adoption of orientation, dependence, relations with family and “star sickness”, there is even a synonymous line with the agent-boyfriend, who turns out to be a traitor and a vicious capitalist adapter (apparently, a really painful problem in the music industry). But where Singer pressed a tear and poured liters of sentimental rain on the actors, Fletcher prefers to laugh it off or project emotions into songs.

The fact that in Eddie “Eagle” seemed banal directorial simplicity, apparently, were sprouts of his amazing sensitivity. Simply put, Oryol was a monosyllabic and naive film, not because Fletcher couldn’t do it differently, but because it was impossible to tell about the hero otherwise - he was exactly the same, a simple ridiculous guy with a bright dream and burning eyes. Having replaced the hero, the director changes the optics as well - now he is impressive and redundant, like Elton John's stadium shows, bright as his costumes, and melodramatic as his slowest hits. “UHD Rocketman” is not an auxiliary material for songs, but an animated collection of the best hits compiled according to all the rules of good albums: he deftly alternates drive with lyrics, sad with funny, lively rock and roll and teary pop ballads. And through them tells a story that could only be told in the language of music.

This, of course, is about the story of Elton John himself, a difficult and ambiguous man, one of those whose life is criminally shown as a boring set of events and consequences. “Rocketman Ultra HD” paints it as a feverish cut of times, places and faces, a colorful extravaganza with flowers and music. He absolutely does not try to be “reliable” (and it is clear that Elton could not sing Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting as a child) or at least somewhat realistic - the film moves from the strict form of the biopic to magical realism, where people levitate at concerts and explode in the sky with fireworks. And they sing, and dance, and sing, and dance - just like in classical musicals, each plot stage is supported by a choreographic number, deliberately theatrical, decorative and, with rare exceptions (yet not all the numbers are equally good), skillfully staged.

And, like many good albums, “Rocketman 4K” is such a psychological portrait (it’s not for nothing that the story in the film is conducted by Elton himself from a collection of anonymous alcoholics): fragmentary, too dramatic, and generally quite superficial - which is especially noticeably closer to the finale, when the concentration of the singer’s internal dialogues exceeds all conceivable limits. But this portrait is always sincere and, importantly, very bold: unlike the live Queen members, Elton does not hesitate to show himself an asshole and a complete drug addict, and the only erotic scene in the film is more frank than many popular gay dramas. In principle, “Rocketman 4K” does not have the courage - both in terms of how he deals with topics (at one point the hero declares that he does not regret his reckless life), and in terms of the approach of Dexter Fletcher, who dared to make the movie strange , unobvious, and sometimes vyviglazno excessive. Well, what else could be a movie about Elton, damn it, John?
