In the recent past, every boy dreamed of becoming an astronaut. In the near future, this may become a reality, but with one small condition - the future conqueror of space should be lucky to be born a genetically flawless person, without flaws, weaknesses and imperfections.
The biotechnology of tomorrow has developed to such a level that eugenics has ceased to be considered a controversial theory and a violation of ethical and moral norms, and the breeding of ideal people has already been put on stream. All genetic defects and their potential consequences are easily deciphered, and people are divided into two social classes - "Valid" and "Invalid" (In-valid). The former receive all-round support from society, while the latter are deprived of the most advantageous life prospects. As a rule, "Good" is the result of a parent's visit to the doctor, where he offers them the choice of the most successful combinations of their genes in order to have a child or a successful combination of genes by chance. "Unfit", as a rule, is the result of completely natural fertilization - ordinary sex, when the genes of the parents converged on luck, which is why they are also called "God's children."
Vincent Freeman (Hawke) is a second class man. He is short-sighted, suffers from a heart defect, and the simplest blood test promises him only 30.2 years of life. But Vincent has a dream - to fly into space. For this, he makes a deal with Jerome Eugene Morrow (Lowe) - a crippled "Good", who sells him his genetic material for testing. Thanks to someone else's blood, urine, hair and skin particles, Vincent manages to deceive the security service of the aerospace corporation GATTAKA, join the crew of the flight to Titan and become close friends with Irene Cassini (Uma Thurman). But all the secret sooner or later becomes apparent. To make his dream come true, Vincent will need more than flawless tests.
In the laboratory where the hero of the film works, a murder takes place. Suspicion falls on the "unfit", whose eyelash is found in the lobby. It belongs to Vincent (seeing a bloody corpse, he accidentally sheds a tear, and, not noticing, an eyelash). However, traces of the present Freeman are lost: no one knows where to look for him and what he does.
The police repeatedly examine all Gattaki employees to find a suspect. The hero manages to undergo the procedure twice, in which he is assisted by the doctor "Gattaki", who has a son, "unfit".
The situation is complicated by the fact that the investigation is being conducted by Vincent's brother, "fit", but having worse health indicators than are necessary for service in space divisions. Vincent will have to meet his brother face to face, and between them youthful rivalry will flare up again, which once played a key role in the life of the protagonist.
The flight to Titan is on the verge of stalling, but Vincent was lucky enough to fulfill his dream. Eugene commits suicide after leaving Vincent his tests, in case he needs them on his return to Earth. And the charming Irene, having learned his secret, remains on Earth, loving and waiting for his return.
