Shutter Island 4K Review

Shutter Island 4K -50s. Two federal marshals (DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo) arrive on the island where there is a psychiatric clinic for dangerous criminals. They will investigate the disappearance of one of the patients, the killer of their own children, inexplicably missing from a locked chamber. The already gloomy island looks quite ominous because of its staff - the demonically patient chief physician (Ben Kingsley), a professor with a suspicious German accent (Max von Sydow) and a very harsh guard. DiCaprio, depressed after the death of his wife who died in a fire, suspects that people are experimenting with people on the island and that the arsonist, guilty of that tragic fire, is contained in the most closed hospital building. The truth will be much darker.

The very first word that comes to mind in connection with the “Island of the Damned” is “respectable”. Live classic Martin Scorsese shoots a movie based on the novel of one of the most fashionable writers in the cinematic (Dennis Lehane wrote The Mysterious River by Eastwood / Mystic River / (2003) and the Glee Baby Gone Baby (2007) ), invites the man of the mystery of DiCaprio to the main role (to tell the truth, no one still knows what to expect from him) and puts on the soundtrack all kinds of neo-classicism from John Cage and Krzysztof Penderecki to Brian Eno and Max Richter. Moreover, a living classic rips up with the commercial conformity of his latest works and returns to twenty years ago, when the border between copyright cinema and commercial was searched again.

The second word that comes to mind in connection with the “Island of the Damned” is “both-on!”. What is not going to be easy becomes clear from the first frame, when steam with marshals slowly emerges from the fog. Speaking on the deck, DiCaprio and Ruffalo, in their cloaks and hats, look like the drenched aniline cover of some noir of the 50s, only drawn in a fit of clinical paranoia / Inglourious Basterds / (2009), knows his business). Memories of the Marshal of the Dachau concentration camp, which he freed by a soldier during the war, his vision, in which the dead wife is to give advice and slowly burn into gray ash, shot by an endless plan of a mass shooting scene, Escher stairs and corridors - it was difficult to expect from Shutter Island 4K Scorsese that he will make such a dramatic turn to Cape of Fear / (1991). Such arrogant cinematographic density in a wide distribution almost never occurs.

However, to respectful amazement is mixed with unplanned anxiety, which intensifies when Ted Levine, who played the prison director, who was once known as the maniac from Silence of the Lambs, The / (1991), and Jackie Earl Hayley, who recently became famous, appears on the screen as Rorschach from the Guardians / Watchmen / (2009). All this begins to resemble too much the story called “Beauty and the Beasts”, where the role of the beauties is very worthy of DiCaprio, and the role of the beasts is professional film-insane. And the more the dark waters of the Atlantic beat on the shore of the island of the damned, the more it seems that the whole Baroque project was annoyingly late - madness as a universal metaphor of the insidious instability of reality no longer scares. Scorsese’s selfless seriousness arouses even some embarrassment, I want to mumble in my defense: “Damn, we already had the Matrix / Matrix, The / (1999) and House 2, do we have to fear hallucinations?”.
