ReviewUnderworld: Blood Wars: Degradation?
The fifth film about the war of vampires and werewolves proved to be weak. It's a shame, because this failure can put an end to the whole series, and ruin good ideas, and if they decide to film the sixth film there, then it is necessary to puzzle and suffer a lot to correct mistakes. Perhaps, each previous film successfully enriched the series. The first one set a delicious start. The second used the success of the first, and began to nurture what was achieved. The third turned out to be a prehistory, and well told about the origins of this gloomy tale. The fourth was the most vigorous and aggressive. He saves style and taste, and boldly added to them a dashing superboy, in addition, with beautiful three-dimensional effects. But the fifth.
The continuation must move the story further, use what has already been achieved, nurture it, add something. The script answers for these things. And here it is weak. He goes almost completely out of the fourth part. There, in the war of vampires and werewolves, humanity intervened. People learned about many things, and this made their changes in the situation. In the fifth film there is not a word about it. Moreover, nothing is shown. Another fourth movie added one new heroine. I really wanted to know what would happen to her next. And in the fifth film, she disappeared. Everyone is looking for, no one can find. That is, the fifth film misses two major innovations, which correctly introduced the fourth. But the ills of the script do not end there. He is lazy, precipitous, raw, familiar, predictable, too naive. He misses the action film and elements of fantasy, and hollows up voids with conversations. There are attempts to play with politics, war, mythology, but they are all helpless and ridiculous. They only weigh the picture. With the logic of events and the behavior of the characters, there are many nonsense. But the most important disappointment is how the film did with Michael Corwin. And the new main villain is an empty place.
In all previous films, the darkness was beautiful, it was specific. A special coloring of the picture, a special selection of music, a vivid contrast between the scarlet blood and the gloomy blue. These things are lost. Here the picture is just dark. There is nothing special about it. There's blood. But it would be better if it was not, because all the scenes with it look dirty and cheap, almost not sliding to the level of thrash. They must be scary or harsh, but they are just unpleasant, sometimes even nasty. That is, nothing special on the screen is not visible. Almost the whole picture is gray and tasteless. Neither of the magical or hypnotic beauty that was present in the previous series, there is no question. Ice landscapes and the northern lights save the situation only briefly.
But there is good here. Special effects are not bad. Especially the muzzles of werewolves near and the destruction of vampire bodies when they hit bullets or rays of light. But the budget of the picture is small. In addition, the camera work is good. The camera moves smoothly everywhere, smoothly, does not tremble. This is a trifle, but important and pleasant. Kate Beckinsale, as before, is good. Still love to look at her. And she regains emotions quite firmly. Where the film flirts with drama, the actress saves it. Theo James is not bad as a vampire. Especially in the elements of the militant, let them be few. Charles Dance was useful, and the place in the plot is significant.
Despite the mountain of problems, in some places the film is good. An interesting twist with the preparation of new "death knights", which pleasantly recalled the second "Blade". A good battle in the ice fortress, especially between Céline and Mariusch on the cracking ice. And the way the image of the main character changes in the last half hour is curious and beautiful. The final battle between vampires and werewolves in the palace is interesting. It is a pity that the film could not be more accurately and correctly brought to her. And the energy of the militant is not enough. But there is something ominous, as if there was a feeling of despair and inevitable death. The fighting encounter between the vampire David and Likan Mariusz is strong. Confrontation Céline and Mariusa - a separate thing. If it were not for the part that is being opened during the fight, it would be just great. But the episode is still powerful and memorable. And even closer to the end of a good sense of humor.
The film could be much better if the creators carefully and carefully did their work. But aside from flaws, there are dignities. Let them and a little. And anyway, do not be willing to judge this movie too severely. "Underworld: Blood Wars" has never been the greatest hit of hire, although it deserves attention. There are many less worthy paintings, which, with a mountain of problems, earn hundreds of millions. And also these critics who broke every film as if there was nothing good there. "Another world: Bloody Wars" is not a cause for stormy joy, but not a complete disappointment. There is still hope. Maybe next time they'll find a more suitable director.
