After the resounding success of the first part, Sasha Baron Cohen made the right decision and officially sent Borat into retirement. In other characters, the comedian was never able to repeat the success of Borat: first, there was a solo album of his third favorite character, Austrian Bruno, built on the same Prank principle, after that - two unsuccessful comedies shot without improvisation with new characters (The Dictator and Brothers from Grimsby "). Last year's Who's America series untied the comedian's hands and returned him to his favorite field of mocking interviews: thanks to new successful images, stoic patience, and the US political climate, the series managed to become a forge of scandals and even partially answer the question in the title. The secretly filmed sequel to Borat seems like a big step back for Cohen: it's just another scripted comedy that spoils the legacy of the great first film.

The first part was not only a homerically funny comedy, but also an outstanding satire on the United States after September 11, such a document of the era - the film clearly demonstrated a disunited nation that tried to maintain its trademark hospitality and tolerance, but at the same time looked at the representatives with distrust and paranoia. national minorities. Cohen, being a genius troll, made people believe that the culture of his country is built on anti-Semitism, homophobia and misogyny - most of the comedian's victims calmly accepted Borat's antics and tacitly agreed with his medieval views. Only a few tried to object to the Kazakh reporter. The second part is completely devoid of this sincerity and satire on the dialogue of cultures, and the charming mythology around Borat himself and his Kazakhstan has lost its credibility and is now presented too grotesque and absurd. Why, even Cohen's Borat accent now sounds broken and parody.

However, "Borat 2" in any case works great as a comedy - obscene, cruel and deliberately stupid: hysteria is guaranteed, the best jokes will be screened out and soon go to the people, and some episodes will be included in the golden fund of Sasha Baron Cohen. True, they will still be negligible compared to the first part, because the new film is terribly secondary to Cohen's previous projects. We saw driving lessons, etiquette, the unsuccessful ball of Borat's daughter in the first part, harmless Republicans are much more successful, tougher and simply funnier Cohen jabbed in the same TV series "Who is America." Finally, in the most scandalous episode of the film, Borat's daughter's interview with Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani, which gradually turns into the bedroom, it's not hard to see an attempt to repeat the failed sex interview with Congressman Ron Paul from Bruno.

Nobody hides why all this is needed: the political activism of Sasha Baron Cohen forced him to resurrect his most famous character and throw him into the embrasure in order to throw the favorite call for the stars to vote on the last title. "Borat 2" is needed only here and now, two weeks before the US presidential election, to once again show the Americans the electorate and Trump's associates. Will it work? Of course not. Everyone already knows that Republicans believe in idiotic conspiracy theories and are ready to sing along to any song criticizing Obama. Even caught red-handed, Giuliani will likely get off with just a couple of embarrassing lines on his Wikipedia page. In a couple of months, the film will become ideologically outdated, and in a few years it will look like a rather unsuccessful comedy that missed the main thing - the opportunity to ridicule COVID-19 and covid dissidents.
